Scuba diving

Plenty to see underwater too!
A rich undersea world not to be missed
There are many scuba diving centres all along the coast including one in Albir. Diving here can be an all year round activity with many excellent diving sites and so much to see without the need to go very deep.
Scuba diving is a particular interest of ours. We dive the whole region from Javea to Benidorm, mostly cliff faces and small coves with drop-offs and swim-throughs, usually from a small boat with one of the local excellent diving centres.
We see many varieties of fish, often in great profusion, including scorpionfish, octopus, moray and conger eels, lobster and shrimp, nudibranch, groupers, shoals of cow bream and damselfish, torpedo rays and large schools of barracuda. Sometimes, if we are really lucky, we may see the odd shaped Ocean Sunfish.
Scuba Diving around the area of Calpe is primarily focused around the Peñon de Ifach – a towering rock promentary stretching far out into the Mediterranean Sea, giving it the appearance of being an island. It is visible from Benidorm to Moraira and for miles around. At the Peñon there is a full range of dive sites from the shallow shore dives at Pebble Beach by the harbour, often used for initial diver training, to the beautiful arches of ” Los Arcos”. Our personal favourite sites are centred on the “Isla de Benidorm”, which is accessible by boat from Benidorm marina. This is a Marine Protection Zone and as a result, the sea life here is even more varied and profuse. The underwater scenery around the island and on the “La Llosa” reef, at the back of the island, is spectacular.

All the diving centres have to be regulated by both the Spanish authorities and their own affiliated bodies, such as PADI or BSAC. By Spanish law you must bring your diving certification with you to be able to dive and basic insurance is required. This can be purchased on a daily basis or for longer, if you don’t already have it.
